Costa Ballena’s golf course is the focal point of the resort’s massive development, and since its inception in 1997 has established itself among the best in Andalucia.
The layout was designed by Ryder Cup star, Jose María Olazabal, and has become a regular choice for top national and international amateur events, in addition to being selected to host a European Tour qualifying event. The championship course is comprised from the 27 holes conceived by Olazabal, and at its full length will measure 6,601 yards. Some holes run alongside the spectacular Atlantic coastline, while further inland the course traverses the lush parkland, and the interesting variation makes Costa Ballena a very satisfying round.
Costa Ballena also has an entertaining par-3 course; the holes measure up to 200 yards and more, showing that it is no push-over!
The complex has a fantastic practice facility and driving range, while the resort is also home to a Scott Cranfield golf academy.
La Estancia is within a couple of miles of both the Melia hotel and the famous la Barrosa beach, and is a very enjoyable resort course. Designed by Dutchman Alan Rijks, the course measures 6,843 yards from the championship markers, but the range of tees will ensure that all abilities are catered for.
The elevated greens are protected by a network of lakes and streams that have been strategically worked into the layout, where accuracy is certainly the most valuable asset. The course is also home to an excellent grass driving range, while the new clubhouse is scheduled for completion in 2007.
Arcos Golf is a relatively new development, set in a truly spectacular Andalucian location. Against the backdrop of the Arcos de la Frontera, the versatile course is capable of posing a severe test to the most talented golfers, but is not overwhelmingly long for the average player.
The main difficulty comes from the strategically positioned tees, which create interesting and challenging angles, but efficient driving will be rewarded; from the perfectly manicured fairways, golfers will be able to attack the targets, where some of the region’s purest greens are a real joy to putt.
Arcos Golf is part of the Landmark National group, whose portfolio includes the Kiawah Island Resort and Mission Hills Golf & Country Club, underlining the outstanding quality that is on offer at Arcos Golf, a worthy visit during a golf holiday in the Cadiz region of Andalucia.
Located very near the centre of Jerez, Sherry Golf has emerged recently as a prominent destination for leading professional and amateur events, while also remaining ideal for golfing tourists.
The par-72 championship and the short par-3 course were both designed by Stirling and Martin of the Global Golf Company. The fairways are wide, and the greens are large and undulating, but with the course measuring 7,185 yards from the back tees, powerful striking is required to score well. This is not to say that Sherry will overwhelm the average player; as is the case with any good new resort course, there is a good variety of tees, with one to suit all visitors.
The championship course is complemented by the entertaining short course and a state-of-the-art tuition and practice academy, underlining the resort’s outstanding quality. A golfing holiday in the Jerez region of Cadiz should certainly include a visist to Sherry Golf.
Sherry has recently been chosen to host full amateur international matches and also a European Tour qualifying event.
